The Sleep-Performance Connection Every Trader Is Ignoring

Six months of correlating sleep data with trading PnL from 400+ traders revealed a pattern that changed how we built EdgeVara.

We ran the numbers expecting to find a small correlation between sleep and trading performance. What we found was absurd. Traders who averaged 7+ hours of sleep outperformed sleep-deprived traders by 3.2x in net P&L over a six-month period. Not 10% better. Not 20% better. 3.2 times better.

The data came from 438 traders who used EdgeVara sleep tracking alongside their trading journal over six months. We controlled for account size, strategy type, and experience level. The pattern held across every subgroup.

The mechanism is not mysterious. Sleep deprivation selectively impairs complex decision-making — the exact cognitive function trading demands most. A sleep-deprived trader is more likely to chase losses, less likely to respect their stop loss, and significantly more likely to overtrade. The impulsivity that follows a bad night of sleep is chemically similar to mild alcohol intoxication.

The most striking finding was the cumulative effect. A single night of poor sleep had a measurable but small impact on the next day's trading. But three or more consecutive nights of inadequate sleep produced a 47% increase in discretionary trades taken outside the trader's stated plan. That is not a coincidence. That is compound cognitive debt.

EdgeVara now integrates sleep data directly into the journal. Your Readiness Radar shows your sleep score alongside your discipline and execution metrics. When the platform detects a pattern of poor sleep followed by plan deviation, it surfaces that insight before your next session — not weeks later in a monthly review.

The practical takeaway is simple: if you want to trade better, sleep more. No indicator, no strategy, no AI coach will compensate for a sleep-deprived brain making high-stakes decisions in real time.
